Pokemon and EarthBound
Many fans have noted similaritities between EarthBound and Pokemon. Most of these commonalities are superficial, but they're clearly there.
After EarthBound, some people from APE moved to GameFreak. APE made EarthBound and GameFreak made Pokemon.
The music that plays when Giegue (Earth Bound 0) comes up is the same as the beginning of the Victory Road/Pokemon League Pokemon Center in Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow.
The two protagonists are boys who wear a red baseball hat, ride a bycicle, and don't have a father present at home. They have a rival who lives near them as well.
The point of EarthBound is to collect 8 melodies and defeat Giygas. The point of Pokemon is to collect 8 badges and defeat the Pokemon league.
Giegue and Mewtwo have a similar body type. In addition, they both cannot understand human emotions (at least the Mewtwo in the movie couldn't).
This is very superficial, but both games are turn-based RPGs.
When a Pokemon trainer spots you, an exclamation point appears over their head. When the postcard woman in Happy Happy village sees you, the same thing happens.
Although it may seem like many things are shared between the games, there are obvious differences. Pokemon centers around capturing and raising Pokemon to win battles and being the very best (like no one ever was). EarthBound is about getting rid of alien influence in the world by collecting eight pieces of songs and then time-travelling. In any case, they're both great games.
